Long Island City High School was the site for our annual Invitational competition, on Sunday, October 6, 2019. 47 fencers from over 10 schools were in attendance, including Beacon, Brooklyn Tech, Bronx High School of Science, Fiorello LaGuardia, Francis Lewis, Hunter, McKee/Staten Island Tech (MSIT), Millennium, Petrides, Stuyvesant and Townsend Harris.
The fencers competed in one round-robin pool, with promotion to a single direct elimination tableau and a bronze medal bout. Award plaques were given to the top 4 places in each weapon.
In the 27-athlete foil field, Beacon’s Nicholas Baumstein went undefeated all day, defeating Bronx Science’s Nicholas Kim 15-10 for the gold, while Brooklyn Tech’s Sebastian Klein defeated Townsend Harris’ Javah Xie 15-10 for the bronze. It seems to be the battle of the two Nicholas’ going for the top foil spot this season and we’re all looking forward to Individual Championships on November 17th!
In epee, 20 fencers competed and Petrides’ Nicholas Glaz took gold after a strong showing in Season Opener, with an awe-inspiring 15-13 win over tough competitor Abraham Bang from Francis Lewis. David Yoo from Hunter defeated Brooklyn Tech’s Dexter Allan-Reilly 15-7 for the bronze.
PSAL Fencing would like to thank the Long Island City High School custodial and school safety staff for preparing and securing our venue. Special thanks go to LaGuardia Head Coach Sara Falkove, MSIT Coach Evangelos Ginos and our team of volunteers who came in early to set up. Thanks to our referees for another fine job making the calls. Thank you to our coaches and parents for endlessly supporting our student athletes. As always, we thank our Associate Commissioner, Judine Watkis. Your continued dedication to PSAL Fencing is much appreciated.
Our next event is the Novice competition, to be held on Sunday, October 13th at LIC. On behalf of the PSAL, we wish all teams the best for a successful regular season.
