  • HCHS Entrance Exam

    ATTENTION TEST TAKERS:
The HCHS Entrance Exam is scheduled for Friday, January 11, 2019. All candidates must arrive with a printed ticket in order to enter the building. It will be important to arrive at the location listed on the ticket at the time indicated on the ticket. There is no need to arrive more than 15 minutes early - doors will open in plenty of time for all children to be seated before the exam begins.

Please be on time. Candidates who arrive more than 30 minutes late to a testing site will not be permitted to take the test.

Friday, January 11 calls for frigid temperatures. Despite this, test site doors cannot open sooner than the posted time because test rooms are being assembled.

Welcome to Hunter College High School (HCHS)

Hunter College High School (HCHS) is a part of the Hunter College Campus Schools, the laboratory schools of the City University of New York administered by Hunter College. Our high school serves students in grades 7-12. The only entry year for HCHS is 7th grade.

We serve students who demonstrate advanced cognitive ability and prepare them to be life-long learners and leaders. We assist in the development of creative, intellectually-curious, and original thinkers who are passionate about learning. Our schools use the principles of gifted education, including depth, complexity, challenge, enrichment, and acceleration of the curriculum, to meet the needs of intellectually-advanced students.

On these pages you will find general information for HCHS admission to the 7th grade. HCHS does not accept inquiries or applications for any other grade. (Students are not admitted into grades 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12.)

We welcome your interest in Hunter College High School. It is our hope that you find this information helpful.

  • How to Apply to HCHS

*THE HCHS APPLICATION SYSTEM IS CLOSED.*
  • Testing Eligibility

The HCHS Entrance Exam is open only to students who reside within the five boroughs of New York City at the time of application submission AND who have earned ONE OF the following:

    1. A qualifying score on the 2018 5th grade NYS Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests.
The qualifying scores needed to sit for the HCHS 2019 Entrance Exam are:
    • NYS English Language Arts (ELA) Scale Score= 625
    • NYS Math Scale Score= 625
FOR NYS TEST-TAKERS, ONLY STUDENTS WITH QUALIFYING SCORES IN BOTH THE 5TH GRADE NYS ELA AND 5TH GRADE NYS MATH TESTS WILL BE SEATED FOR THE HCHS ENTRANCE EXAM.

    2. A score in the 90th (national) percentile of the 2018 5th Grade Reading Comprehension and 2018 5th Grade Math tests used at their independent or parochial schools -- and have NEVER taken the NYS 5th grade ELA and NYS 5th grade mathematics exams.

    3. A score in the 90th (national) percentile from any of these standardized (2018) 5th grade exams:
    • ERB Comprehensive Testing Program 4
    • TerraNova
    • Stanford Achievement Test
    • Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP 4)
    • Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)
Scores from school-specific exams, or from one of the exams listed above, are to be reported by the principal OR guidance counselor of the child's middle school directly to the HCHS Admissions office. **Copies of official scores are NOT accepted from the applicant or applicant's family.**

STUDENTS WITHOUT ANY OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED TEST SCORES.
In certain cases, HCHS will administer a qualifying examination (QE) to 6th grade students for whom no test scores are available. For example, the QE will be available to homeschooled applicants or 6th grade applicants from schools that did NOT administer any acceptable examination, or to 6th grade students who opted out of the NYS exams, provided the principal of the current school submits a letter to HCHS Admissions confirming the absence of scores from ANY ACCEPTABLE EXAM listed above, and attesting to the student’s academic readiness for the HCHS exam. The QE is administered at the Hunter College Campus Schools in December. There is a fee to take the QE, which must be covered by the family and made payable on the day of the exam. The results of the qualifying exam will determine if the student is eligible to sit for the HCHS Entrance Exam in January.

Applicants MUST have the qualifying [reading and math] scores on one of the exams listed above OR must meet the "No Scores" requirement as listed above, in order to apply and sit for the HCHS entrance exam. There are no exceptions to the eligibility requirements.

**DO NOT SUBMIT AN HCHS APPLICATION IF THE STUDENT SCORED BELOW THE MINIMUM ON ANY OF THE EXAMS LISTED ABOVE.**

  • The Day of the Entrance Exam

Tickets for the HCHS Entrance Exam will be sent (to the primary parent email) when the application is complete and the child’s qualifying 5th grade test scores have been verified. If a ticket for the exam is not received by 5:00pm on December 14th, 2018, an email should be sent to HCHSAdmit@hccs.hunter.cuny.edu.The email must include: the child’s first and last names, home address, and parent phone number. When the email is received by HCHS Admissions, a duplicate exam ticket will be emailed.

** Please do not email the Admissions Office to inquire about exam tickets until after December 14th. The score-verification process is lengthy and HCHS staff will need this time period to verify scores for all applicants.**

The test for entry in fall 2019 will be administered on JANUARY 11th, 2019 at one of three locations:
    1. HCHS at 94th St. between Park and Madison Avenues
    2. Hunter College – West Building at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue
    3. Hunter College – North Building at 69th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues
If eligible to take the HCHS Entrance Exam, the applicant will be assigned a location and room for exam day; admission tickets to the exam will be sent for the child and the parent, along with information about pick-up and drop-off times and locations, and comprehensive information about test day.
