Music Auditions Signup 2020

Update: -- Auditions are now closed ---

Thank you for your patience as we worked to revise the audition process to take place remotely. Due to the complications involved with live auditions, all incoming 7th Grade music auditions will take place by VIDEO SUBMISSION. We understand this is not ideal and may present technological challenges. Unfortunately, this is the only way we can adequately hear and evaluate your student at this time.

Please understand that the nature of our performance ensembles is very much uncertain for next year. Given the need to maintain a healthy and safe environment, including social distancing, students enrolled in our performance ensembles may find their experience to be drastically different from the groups they may have been a part of in the past.

Video Instructions

Your audition video should contain the following components:

ALL STUDENTS (Instrumental and Vocal)
  • Take about 30 SECONDS to introduce yourself, say what piece you are playing, and anything else you would like us to know about you.
  • Play/sing about 2 MINUTES of any piece that best demonstrates your musical ability. Consider recent repertoire from your private lessons or past recital performances. You do not need piano accompaniment but students auditioning for Junior Jazz may use a play-a-long recording if they like.
  • Students auditioning for Junior Jazz Ensemble should prepare a piece relevant to the Jazz idiom. Repertoire could include a jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm.
  • Additionally, for instrumentalists, follow the additional requirements for your instrument as detailed below:

STRING INSTRUMENTS and PIANISTS for Junior Orchestra
  • Play one, 2 octave major scale, ascending and descending, of your choice.
  • In addition to the prepared piece of your choice play the assigned audition piece for your instrument, available here:
WIND INSTRUMENTS for Junior Orchestra and Junior Jazz
  • Play a Bb concert scale, one octave, ascending and descending, of your choice.
  • In addition to the prepared piece of your choice play the assigned audition piece for your instrument, available here:
RHYTHM INSTRUMENTS (Piano, Vibraphone, Guitar, Bass, and Drums) for Junior Jazz
  • In addition to the prepared piece of your choice, play either "Autumn Leaves" or "Sonnymoon for two" by following the lead sheet available here:
VOCALISTS for Junior Chorus
  • No additional audition song is required other than your prepared piece.

NOTE: If you are auditioning with more than one instrument/voice, please prepare separate videos.
  1. Prepare your spoken intro and prepared piece, as well as the additional audition requirements if you are an instrumentalist.
  2. Practice making your video and ensure that you are clearly visible and able to be heard. Use a family member to help in the recording process.
  3. Record your audition on your phone or other recording device. Make sure that the final video is playable and able to be shared.
  4. Include your video link in the audition form (below). Submissions must be received by Wednesday, June 17.
Here are several good ways to get your video link:
    • Put your video on Google Drive, DropBox, OneDrive or other file sharing service and submit a shareable link so we can access the video.
    • Post your audition as an UNLISTED video on YouTube and share the URL of the video.
ALSO
  • Include the email that you wish to receive further communication from.
  • We are only accepting links to video files and not audio only files because we want to see the student play the instrument as well as hear them.
  • If you do not have the technical ability to prepare a video at this time, please email Robert Randall (contact info below) to discuss an alternative method for auditioning.
