  • Junior Chorus

    Please prepare one song that demonstrates your current level of vocal ability. Songs from the classical, folk, or musical theater genre are preferable.
  • Junior Orchestra (Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Keyboards)

    Please prepare one selection that demonstrates your current level of ability.
  • Pianists (Chamber Music)

    Please prepare one movement of a work that demonstrates your current level of ability.  Also be able to play all major and minor scales. There will also be a short sight reading requirement.

Jr. Jazz Ensemble: Expectations and Requirements

Hunter College High School Jr. Jazz Ensemble is a 7-9th grade group consisting of woodwinds, brass, and rhythm section players. The group consists of multiple levels and musical backgrounds; all students with a strong interest in the ensemble are encouraged to audition. Sample repertoire is provided below. Students who wish to audition should prepare a piece that reflects their current musical ability and should be relevant to the ensemble.

Piano, Vibraphone, Guitar, Bass (acoustic or electric), Drum Set

  • Brass and Woodwinds

    • Scales: Concert F and Bb major scales, one octave up and down.
    • Repertoire: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm. Advanced: basic improvisation.
    • Sample repertoire is provided below.
  • Piano

    • A piano is provided.
    • Repertoire: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm. Audition should include playing a melody and left hand chordal accompaniment. Advanced: Improvisation with left hand accompaniment.
    • Sample repertoire is provided below.
  • Vibraphone

    • A vibraphone is provided. Students should provide mallets.
    • Repertoire: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm. Audition should include playing a melody and ability to provide chordal accompaniment (i.e. comping). Basic improvisation.
    • Sample repertoire is provided below.
  • Guitar

    • Guitar amps will be provided. Students should bring their guitar, patch cable and a tuner.
    • Please note that the ensemble requires the use of a guitar with a pick up.
    • Repertoire: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm. Audition should include playing a melody and ability to provide chordal accompaniment (i.e. comping). Basic improvisation. Advanced: Sight-reading.
    • Sample repertoire is provided below.
  • Bass

    • Bass amps will be provided. Students should bring their bass, patch cable, and a tuner if needed.
    • Repertoire: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm. Audition should include walking a bass line on a standard jazz form such as a blues or 32-bar standard. Advanced: Basic improvisation (soloing), performing a melody on the bass.
    • Sample repertoire is provided below.
  • Drum Set

    • A drum set and cymbals are provided. Students should bring sticks.
    • Knowledge of a variety of grooves, including a basic swing groove, bossa nova, and rock.
    • Advanced: A jazz tune, standard, or etude that demonstrates knowledge of jazz rhythm and form (i.e. blues, 16 or 32-bar form). Time keeping and trading 4's with a soloist, ballad or up-tempo time keeping.
