Long Island City, Academy of American Studies, Beacon, and Martin L. King all ended their season by claiming PSAL Soccer Championships in their respective divisions.
In the Girls B Division L.I.C. Freshman Stephanie Perez Santos put five balls in the back of the net leading the Bulldogs to a dominant 7-0 victory over Maspeth. L.I.C entered the playoffs as the #3 seed running through the bottom of the bracket scoring 25 goals while surrendering only 2 in victories over George Washington, Manhattan Center for Math & Science, Mott Haven, and H.S. for Environmental Studies enroute to the finals.
Academy of American Studies were 3-1 winners over Thomas Edison in the Boys B finals. Senior Milto Sionakides led the Eagles with a pair of goals, the first in the 34th minute and the second in the 43rd minute. American Studies entered the tournament as the #10 seed upsetting #7 Hunter 1-0 in the quarters, and #3 Flushing 4-3 in the semifinals to set the stage for knocking off top seeded Edison in the finals.
For the second year in a row Beacon found their way to the Girls A final with Junior Olivia Morrow, Senior Allana Alcorn, and Sophomore Sydney Poppinga all scoring goals to secure a 3-0 victory over Hunter College H.S. Beacon, the tournaments #3 seed, defeated Lincoln, Curtis, Brooklyn Tech, and Susan Wagner to find their way to the finals. The championships victory avenged a regular season loss to Hunter, capping the year with 15-1 record.
The Boys A game featured a finalist regular in Martin L. King, and a Curtis squad that hadn’t brought home a PSAL title in a century, last winning the league in 1917. It was a scoreless first half, but top seeded M.L.K demonstrated why they are ranked as a top five team nationally with a volley of goals in in the second half. Senior Gaoussou Coulibaly scored a hat trick and senior Akeem Shelton added a fourth for good measure, while Goal Keeper Rashawn Best, who gave up only one goal in the teams championship run, kept the #7 seed Curtis strikers at bay to run away with a 4-0 win.
