HCHS chess players excel at US Chess National K-12 Grade Championships

Congratulations to the HCHS chess players competing at the US Chess Nationals!

HCHS sent a 12-person team to the US Chess National K-12 Grade Championships this past weekend.  The 7th Grade team finished in first as 7th Grade National Champions beating out a few traditional chess powerhouses and very strong overall competition.  They were led by Marcus M who finished in a tie for 4th (10th on tie-breaks), Connor D (tied for 13th and 21st on tie breaks), with Ella M, Hamilton S, Merlin G, and Brian W tied for the last scoring team member.

Also playing well for the team were Bradley R, Dylan S, and Maximo K.  John M and Alex H competed well in the 9th grade section.

Thanks to coaches Sunil Weeramantry, Farai Mandizha and Ilye Figler, chess club advisor Ms. Krilov, the HCHS administration and the HCHS PTA for the team support.
