Congrats to senior SOPHIE G, a top 40 FINALIST in the 2024 REGENERON STS Competition!

Congratulations to our own Sophie G, named a top 40 FINALIST in the 83rd Regeneron Science Talent Search (formerly known both as the Westinghouse or INTEL STS), the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors!
Sophie's project earned her finalist status when selected as one of 40 scholars from 2,162 applications  from 712 high schools in across 46 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and ten other countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists and hail from 196 American and international high schools and homeschools in 36 states and China.

As a finalist, Sophie will participate in the Finals Week competition March 7-13, 2024. Finalists are each awarded at least $25,000, and the top 10 winners will receive awards ranging from $40,000 to $250,000.

She joins the ranks of 13 Nobel prize winners, 22 MacArthur Foundation Fellows and many other distinguished alumni of the Science Talent Search.   She joins 8 other HCHS alumnae/i since 1981 who have been named finalists in this world renowned competition.   This honor identifies Sophie among the nation’s most promising young scientists or mathematicians

Sophie's project uses a fruit fly model to characterize how a novel cancer drug, MRTX1133, behaves in the body, and suggests mechanisms of resistance to the drug. This is the first time fruit flies have been used to model the effects of a drug like MRTX1133, which is among the first of its kind to effectively treat a cancer mutation that, up until a few years ago, was considered “undruggable.”

Sophie, we are so proud of you and wish you the best of luck in Washington, D.C. in March!
