HCHS 2023 Witmer Lecture: The Social History of Early Rock ’n’ Roll in Hamburg, Germany

Dr. Julian Sneeringer, 2023 Witmer Lecturer
The Witmer Lecture is hosted by the HCHS Social Studies Department.  This year's guest historian was Professor Julia Sneeringer who is at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center.  Her research focuses on the social history of popular music and youth culture in 20th century Germany, particularly West Germany and the port city of Hamburg. In addition to  articles, she is the author of two books: A Social History of Early Rock ’n’ Roll in Germany: Hamburg from Burlesque to the Beatles, 1956-1969 (Bloomsbury Academic Press, 2018) and Winning Women’s Votes: Politics and Propaganda in Weimar Germany (Univ. of North Carolina Press, 2002).
