Climate Week: London’s Deputy Mayor Visits the HCES's Hydroponics Lab

During Climate Week HCES welcomed Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, for a visit to our hydroponics classroom.

Deputy Mayor Coban toured the classroom and met with students who shared their latest experiments, discoveries, and lessons from growing food in a hydroponic environment.

Students brought their learning to life with plenty of enthusiasm and a few surprising stories. They shared a Halloween-themed coded story about accidentally growing a broccoli so large that it broke one of the hydroponic systems! They also discussed the benefits of the “Three Sisters" approach, an Indigenous American farming practice that grows winter squash, maize, and climbing beans together to support healthier plants and increase yields.

Deputy Mayor Coban, who has championed efforts to address water pollution and advance community-owned renewable energy initiatives in London, brought a valuable global perspective to the classroom. The visit offered an opportunity to explore the connections between people, technology, food production, and the environment and how each plays a role in addressing climate change.

Thank you to NY Sun Works and to Deputy Mayor Mete Coban for their commitment to building a more sustainable future for all.
