2017 Winning word: Lugubrious – expressive of, marked by or giving rise to grief or sorrow : mournful

Last week, 68 students from 24 schools participated in the 2017 Manhattan Spelling Bee at PS 59 – Beekman Hill International. It was a riveting event celebrating the oft-overlooked art of spelling. The tremulous voice of some participants indicated they were a bit nervous; while others exuded confidence & were a bit more charismatic. The overall ebullience of the students was pervasive, and kept the spirits of everyone high over the course of the three plus hours.
Twelve spellers (the top 6 places, including ties) will go on to participate in the Citywide Bee, which will be held at the NYPL on March 20th and March 21st.
