Hunter Students Honored at CCNY’s 54th Annual Poetry Festival

Hunter College High School students were proudly recognized at the prestigious 54th Annual Poetry Festival hosted by The City College of New York on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Aaron Davis Hall.

The annual festival, presented by the Division of Humanities and the Arts and co-sponsored by Poets & Writers, celebrates young writers from across New York City through a full day of readings, performances, and literary recognition.

Among this year’s celebrated student voices was our own HCHS Student, Michelle Z., who earned 1st Place in the High School Division for her moving poem, “A Baby with Blood the Color of Fall.”

I am someone’s Asian baby
brought into this world by parents
who brought their lives and their families to the New World—
new seeds sprouting across the sea, but
the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I am someone’s Asian baby
wrapped in a blanket the color of fall—
brilliant shades of red and yellow—
the moment I left the womb.
Bathed in golden sunlight,
red rosy cheeks, they all cooed and giggled
as they looked down at me.

Michelle’s powerful writing explores identity, heritage, family, and belonging through vivid imagery and emotional depth.

The festival also featured acclaimed guest poet Kay Poema alongside readings from elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as college writers and invited guests from across New York City.

We congratulate Michelle Z. on this outstanding achievement and celebrate all of the students who shared their voices through poetry at this inspiring citywide event.
