Arbor Day on Governors Island: Seniors Engage in Environmental Fieldwork

On April 24, current Hunter College High School seniors (soon-to-be graduates) spent the day on Governors Island participating in an interdisciplinary field experience focused on environmental science, sustainability, and marine research.

In recognition of Arbor Day, students worked with Earth Matter to take part in a hands-on restoration activity, including the planting of a young American chestnut sapling and contributing to soil preparation using locally produced compost.

A group of students also visited the Harbor School Marine Biology Wet Lab, where they observed ongoing marine research, including experimental oyster systems and related ecological work.

Students additionally engaged with Seaweed City, learning about regenerative ocean practices and climate-focused innovation. Throughout the day, students rotated through site-based learning experiences across the island.

The visit concluded with time on the Parade Ground before returning to Manhattan by ferry, offering seniors a final opportunity to connect environmental learning with real-world application in a field setting.

Special thanks to Ms. Ellen Fox for her support in coordinating this student experience.
