  • What is the Academic Insights Profile (AIP)?

    The Academic Insights Profile (AIP) provides an additional opportunity for students who narrowly miss the qualifying score on one or both required subtests. Families may submit an AIP for consideration after the regular application period.

    If space remains after all eligible applications have been reviewed, some AIP applicants may be invited to take the Hunter College High School Entrance Exam. Invitations may be extended shortly before the exam and are not guaranteed.

  • Is my child Eligible?

    Candidates submitting an AIP must meet the grade and residency requirements listed on the main HS Application page. AIP candidates have a different minimum score requirement, as outlined in the "Qualification Exams” section below.
     
    AIP is the only alternative pathway for students who do not meet the standard qualifying score. Students who fall below the AIP score range, as listed in the chart below, are not eligible to re-test or to apply to HCHS. 

    Do NOT submit a standard application or an AIP without having the minimum score.

Qualification Exam Scores

Students must meet the minimum score requirements below to be eligible to submit an Academic Insights Profile (AIP). Please refer to the chart for the qualifying score based on the 5th grade exam your child has taken.

To submit the standard application, a student must meet the minimum qualifying score on both ELA and Math. Scores are not averaged or combined. For example, a student who scores 474 on ELA and 500 on Math would be eligible only for AIP.

  • …administers NYS Exams.

    (If your child did not take one or both NYS Exams in 5th grade, please see one of the other options below. We will verify that they did not sit for the NYS Exam(s) with their counselor.)

    To qualify for AIP using the 2026 5th grade NYS Exams, students must meet both minimum scores:
    • ELA English Language Arts =  474
    • Math = 491
    If your child meets the higher qualifying scores for the standard application, please submit a "HS Application" instead.
     
    An official score report or screenshot from the NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) must be uploaded with the application. The report must clearly show the student's name, grade, exam year, and three-digit scale scores (in English). Hunter will not accept performance levels or percentage ranges in place of scale scores. 
     
    To access scores through NYCSA, go to https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/
    • Log in to your account (contact your school for assistance).
    • Select My Student.
    • Select Assessments to view the student's test results.

  • …administers ONLY non-NYS Exams (including homeschool).

    (If your child takes both NYS Exams and another type of exam, we will only accept the NYS Exam results as a qualifying score. See the “… administers NYS Exams” section above.)

    For students whose 5th-grade school did not administer the NYS exams, AIP consideration requires scores at or above the 85th national percentile in both Reading/ELA and Math on one of the approved exams listed below. Score reports must reflect a Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 administration, include a national percentile rank (or equivalent), and be from an exam administered by a school or testing center.

    * ERB CTP 5 (Reading Comprehension + Mathematics Parts 1 & 2) 
    * Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) (ELA total + Math total)
    * TerraNova 3 (Reading Composite + Mathematics Composite)
    * Stanford 10 Online (Total Reading + Total Mathematics)
    (The Stanford 10 abbreviated battery is accepted.)
     
    Scores must be submitted with the application on an official score report that clearly displays the student's name, grade, scores, and exam year. 
     
    The following exams cannot be used as NYS Exam equivalents:
    - ERB Milestones
    - NWEA MAP
    - iReady
    - ISEE (no longer accepted)
    - SSAT (no longer accepted)

    If the only exam your child took in 5th grade is not accepted, please see the instructions for students who did not take exams below.
     
    Families seeking approval for another standardized exam -- other than the ones listed above -- should email the score report to admissions@hunterschools.org to request consideration before applying.

  • Submitting an AIP

    If the student meets the grade, residency, and AIP score requirements described above, you may submit an AIP by visiting the HUNTER PAGE in Ravenna. Create an account, then select "Academic Insights Profile (AIP)" to begin.

    Parents/guardians must upload a screenshot of the student's NYS Exam scores or an official score report from another qualifying exam shwoing that the student meets the AIP minimum score requirements. All scores will be verified with the student's school. 

    Do not send recommendation letters, report cards, awards, photos, essays, or other unsolicited materials.
