Amazing results for HCHS at Nat'l HS Chess Championship!

With a record-breaking registration of over 1,750 students and representing hundreds of schools, the US Chess Federation’s 2023 National High School Chess Championship took place in Washington DC March 30th -April 2nd. With the support of our coaches, Sunil and Farai, Hunter High School fielded one of the tournament’s largest school teams with 24 players. Displaying tremendous grit, determination, and camaraderie, the HCHS team persevered against extremely tough competitors, winning 3rd place in both the Championship Tournament and Blitz Competition. Many Hunter players also won top individual awards.
The Chess Team would like to thank their steadfast coaches, Sunil and Farai, their Faculty Advisor, Ms. Krilov, the HCHS Administration, and the PTA for their support.

Aside from the high participation numbers and strong performance of the HCHS Chess Team, the most memorable aspect of this year’s tournament was the participation of 10 Seniors: 5 teammates who have consistently played together since Kindergarten were joined by another 5 teammates who came out of chess retirement for one last hurrah as a team. The US Chess article linked below, “Sunil’s Prodigal Seniors,” sheds a spotlight on this phenomenal group who set a high bar of inspiration for the Hunter community – they exemplified the meaning of teamwork, friendship, sportsmanship, community, and great character.
