1 Great Year!

Back and better than ever, Hunter Athletes showed once again that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Hunter won a school record five PSAL  city championships in one year !!  Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Volleyball, Girls JV Volleyball, Girls Varsity Golf, Coed Varsity Bowling, Coed Varsity Golf, Boys Varsity Volleyball, and Girls Varsity Badminton all went undefeated in their regular seasons, and Boys Cross Country and Girls and Boys Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track secured first in the borough. Furthermore, this year Hunter had eleven teams— Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Golf, Girls Varsity Tennis, Girls and Boys Varsity Cross Country, Boys Varsity Fencing, Girls Varsity Lacrosse, Boys Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Outdoor Track, and Girls Varsity Fencing— all place as one of the top three teams in the city. Although most teams have not had a real season since 2020, we came back strong this year with teams having their best season in decades and beating long-time rivals all across the city.

While all teams had a remarkable showing and every athlete made an important contribution, this year we saw some incredible individual accomplishments made by Hunter Athletes. Seniors gave it their all in their last year as Hunter Athletes and saw huge success. Basketball Captain Gavin Levy (12) led the entire country for months in blocks, ultimately finishing in second, and was recognized in NY1’s scholar athlete series. Captain and star swimmer Leila Paltrowitz (12) earned the 2021 Fran Schnarr Memorial Award for Outstanding Senior Swimmer. Katherine Walker (12) was recognized by the PSAL Scholar Athlete award for her contributions to Hunter Athletics. James Thompson (12) took first place in the Outdoor Borough Championships in both the 200m and 400m, and finished second in the whole city in the 400m. Sophia Kshwendt (12) began pole vaulting her sophomore year and since then has dominated, winning first in the Borough every season, doing excellent in Cities as she placed second this Outdoor season, and making it to States several times. Speaking of State Champions, Leina Goldman (11) won third place in the whole state in Girls Varsity Wrestling. Henry Koike-Sieira (10) has also qualified for State Championships after placing first in Steeplechase at Cities. Track athletes have been smashing school records all year, and along with Henry, distance runners Shane Murphy (10), Rebecca Sonn-Lees (10), Dylan McElhinney (9), and Ella Cohen (9) have all qualified for Nationals. Another amazing showing came from Freshman Sophia Li (9) who won the Girls Golf Individual City Championships with a school record of 68 points, lowest in PSAL City Championship history. Sophia Karaev (11)  finished first in the 1-meter diving city championship with a final score of 361.05. Merlin Gogolin (11) has brought both fame and fans to Basketball, and placed 16th in the city in overall points per game. All and all, the Hunter Hawks have undoubtedly proven this year that, in the words of Tony Fisher himself “Hunter is a jock school.”

Hunter Athletics live-streamed every home game on the Hunter NFHS network.  HSPN, the Hunter Sports network produced three shows during 2022.   Hunter added several esports - league of legend teams and created an unofficial instagram account so you can follow and stay current with your favorite Hunter team - @athleticassociation.  You can now consume Hunter Athletics 24/7.
