Stuyvesant Girls Volleyball Reigns Supreme

On the evening of November 20th, 2018 the PSAL Girls’ Volleyball “A” Championships took place at the Queens  College Fitzgerald Gym.  In the battle between two Manhattan schools, the 1st seed Hunter College HS Hawks  took on the 2nd seed Stuyvesant HS Vixens for the ultimate title of  City Champions.  In the end, Stuyvesant bested Hunter by the scores of 13-25, 25-20 and 25-17.
In the first set, Hunter jumped out  to a commanding lead causing Stuyvesant to call their second time-out at  17-10.  Both middle hitters for Hunter College HS, #20 Amira Purnell and #11 Hillary Zeng, dominated the net making it impossible for Stuyvesant to run any offense.   Both females contributed huge on the offensive end, as well, making it  nearly impossible for the Vixen to catch up.   Hunter commanded the first set by the score of 25-13.
The Vixens would not go down  without a fight as their energy was apparent within the first serve of the set.  Alexandra Archer started strong  with 3 straight kills giving Stuyvesant the momentum.  After a time-out by Hunter, the Hawks slowly  chipped away at Stuyvesant’s lead from 6 to 2 points.  Clever and timely hitting by both #5 Anais  Delfau and #11 Alina Luckey allowed Stuyvesant to pull away with a 25-20 win.
With 1 set a piece, Stuyvesant came swinging in the 3rd set jumping to a quick 10-2 lead. #5 provided the offensive work to keep her teammate #11 at the service line.  After the switch at 13 points,  Hunter’s #19 Samantha Fong provided a spark for the Hawks with a 3-point  serving streak.  Stuyvesant’s middle hitter #15 Archer proved too much for Hunter as she closed the set with 2 kills followed by an ace.  The final score of  the 3rd set was 25-17.
Congratulations to Coach Vasken Choubaralian and the Stuyvesant High School Volleyball team on their win.
